A new ingredient is taking the stage in the world of cannabis and it’s called CBD, scientifically known as cannabidiol. Many are already familiar with the now ubiquitous chemical derived from the marijuana plant. It appears in everything from bath oil to a latte at the neighborhood coffee shop. Some people are aware that it is just one component of the cannabis plant, doesn’t produce the high that THC does and can have a very calming effect. A lot of people claim that it’s very effective in alleviating stress. But, others are skeptical.

To understand this more clearly, it should be explained what CBD is and what it isn’t. It’s one of the hundreds of naturally occurring compounds of the cannabis plant, but it doesn’t have the psychoactive effect, or high, that THC provides.

Although many marijuana products are derived from cannabis plants that have high concentrations of THC, there are a whole host of others which are high in CBD and which were derived from plants high in CBD. CBD oils are generally derived from plants which are high in CBD and low in THC. Rubbing the oil onto your skin might moisturize it, but it won’t give you a buzz. It can, however, provide a calming effect.

There’s definitely a psychological effect that occurs with the consumption of CBD. The compound interacts with the endocannabinoid system, which essentially aids in regulating the central nervous system development, as well as the body’s responses to internal and external factors and stressors. This translates into positively impacting how well someone is able to deal with stress and have a more stable mood.

CBD does have some side effects, one being fatigue which is fairly common.

A medical survey conducted in 2011 showed that for people who suffer from conditions like epilepsy, CBD had a better “side effect profile” when compared with some other treatments. This means the rate of side effects for CBD is very low. Anyone wanting to try CBD for the first time should discuss it with a physician.

Although there are still a lot of roadblocks impeding researchers who want to conduct studies on the potential health benefits of cannabis, the studies that have been conducted appear favorable.

One such example is a review of research published in the journal Neurotherapeutics. It found that there is much potential for CBD to be used as a treatment for a variety of anxiety disorders. Although this type of evidence provides hope for many, some doctors feel that there needs to be more clinical trials to find out just how effective and safe CBD is for patients and the general population.

CBD is already available in a plethora of forms and can be fairly easily obtained at health food stores, pharmacies and dispensaries, such as Trulieve, which has locations throughout Florida.

It’s always best to educate yourself as to how much CBD compound is in any given product and even where the compound was derived. This type of information might not always be apparent depending on where a given CBD product might be purchased. Industrial hemp tends to have very low amounts of THC. Some stores may sell  a variety of CBD that is not extracted from hemp and and is instead extracted from plants that have a much higher THC content. If CBD comes from hemp, it will not cause a “high.”
