In Florida, hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th every year. Hurricanes may be difficult to predict, but there’s one thing you can be certain of, you need to be prepared. Advanced preparation is especially important if you have medical needs.

This year's hurricane season is well under way, how prepared are you?

Not only is it important to prepare for a hurricane in advance, it’s also important to be sure to keep stocked up on your supplies throughout the entire Season so you don’t get caught off guard. Due to COVID 19, this year’s planning requires extra special attention because we also need to protect ourselves and others from the virus.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends preparing an advance supply of non-perishable food and water, keeping a well-stocked first aid kit as well as an emergency supply kit. The emergency supply kit needs to include things like: change of clothes to last for several days (including sturdy shoes), toothbrush, toothpaste, soap and other personal hygiene items, flashlights with extra batteries, cell phone and laptop chargers, sleeping bags or warm blankets for everyone in your family, and for the little ones: books, games or puzzles (let your kids help you pick these out) along with your child’s favorite stuffed animal or security blanket. Be sure to include pet food and extra water for your furry family members!

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends medical patients make arrangements ahead of time to have at least a 2-week supply of medicine on hand. However, due to the uncertain times we’re living in, you may want to to consider making full use of your medical cannabis recommendation and purchasing your full flower allotment in addition to the other products you use regularly. In addition to your medical cannabis, be sure to stock up on any needed prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs and vitamins, to ensure you will have enough to carry you through if a storm affects where you live.

Most importantly, you will want to check to be sure that both your medical cannabis card is up to date and that your physician recommendation is active. Remember, not only do you want to make sure your medicine is well stocked, you also want to be sure your medical supplies are in good working order. This is a good time to replace supplies that haven’t been working that great or that you’re just not that sure about. You may want to consider getting an extra battery or delivery device, the last thing you want to happen is to have your device stop working in the middle of a hurricane or an evacuation order.

Due to COVID 19, health experts are saying that home delivery is the safest choice for buying disaster supplies. With Trulieve’s safe and convenient delivery options, including free delivery with a purchase of $200+ and free delivery for Seniors 65 & over, this option provides additional peace of mind during these worrisome times.

Be sure to keep your personal ID, your medical cannabis card, your medical insurance cards and other important documents in a safe space that will stay dry. Be prepared to take these with you in case you have to evacuate.

You are the best person to prepare your family for a disaster because you best understand the unique health care needs of your family, including pets. Preparing in advance will help you keep an already stressful situation, a little more under control. Be well and stay safe out there!
